I was so taken by an idea recently provided by a host mother on our online community site (http://community.culturalcare.com/culturalcare) that it inspired me for this week’s Nat Chat.  This host mother was offering advice on how to help kids transition as they say goodbye to their departing au pair and she suggested videotaping the au pair reading a story to the children.  I thought this was such a great idea as it allows the kids to see her again as they make this sometimes difficult adjustment.  It’s also a wonderful keepsake for the children as they grow up and can have a collection of stories read by their beloved au pairs over the years.  Au pairs could read a story, sing a song, or even give messages to the kids about welcoming the new au pair or being good for mommy and daddy.  As your host families prepare to say goodbye to their au pair at the end of his/her year, consider giving them this suggestion as a sweet way to remember a wonderful friend.
